GiA Working Principle Challenge 4.0

The aim of this challenge is to create the curiosity for knowledge in the mind of African teenagers. We use many electronic devices in our day-to-day activities and we are only concerned about learning how to use them rather than how it works.

This challenge is designed to make African geniuses to search for this knowledge and creatively present it as a poster presentation.

Our goal is to boost the curiosity and creativity of African teenagers to learn
science from their immediate environment.

Eligibility
The participant must be an African.
● Secondary school student
● First-year undergraduate student

The Challenge

Submit a creatively designed, handwritten or typed poster presentation that explains the working principle of any of the electronic devices below:

  1. Scientific Calculator
  2. Rechargeable Lamp
  3. Refrigerator
  4. Radio
  5. Microphone

What is a Poster Presentation?

A sheet of paper that contains information about a particular topic or concept.
The information is in the form of pictures and texts.

Format Allowed
Here is a description of the poster format that is accepted for the challenge:
● Maximum of two pages
● A creatively designed typed poster in .pdf, doc, jpeg or png (hint: you can
use www.canva.com to design your poster) or creatively designed
handwritten poster can be scanned as pdf.
● Every entry must include a reference to the source of the information.
Include websites, textbook titles, and other resources that were used.
● Any submission without references will be considered invalid.
● Every poster must have the name of the student on it.

Winner’s Prize
The Genius in Africa Working Principle Challenge Team will select a maximum of
25 posters and each of them will be awarded a 20 USD cash prize.

Winner’s Notification
The winners will be notified via email and phone calls where necessary. Genius in
Africa has the right to announce the full name of the winners on Genius in
Africa’s social media platforms. Prizes will be awarded within 30 days of
notification.

Submission

  • Fill out the form and upload your poster.
  • For students without internet access, GiA volunteers, family members, and friends can help with the scanning of their handwritten posters and also submit them on their behalf.
  • Phone numbers of parents/guardians can be used if the applicant is not reachable.

Terms and Conditions

1. Eligibility
The Working Principle Challenge is open to:
● Secondary school students.
● First-year undergraduate students.
Participants must provide accurate information regarding their educational
status during registration.
Any participant found to have misrepresented their eligibility (e.g., not being a
secondary school or first-year undergraduate student) will be disqualified from
the challenge and forfeit any award or recognition.

2. Submission Guidelines
● All entries must be created by the participant(s).
● Submissions should clearly explain or demonstrate the working principle
behind a selected device, phenomenon, or system.
● The organizing committee reserves the right to verify the authenticity of
all submissions.
● All submissions must include references of the sources of information
presented. The absence of references leads to automatic disqualification.

3. Media and Publicity
By participating in the Working Principle Challenge, participants grant Genius in
Africa (GiA) the right to:
● Share their names, photos, and submitted content (e.g., posters, videos,
pictures, write-ups) on GiA’s official social media platforms, websites,
newsletters, or other promotional materials.
● Use submitted materials for non-commercial educational and
awareness-raising purposes.

4. Disqualification and Withdrawal
● Any form of dishonesty, plagiarism, or misrepresentation will lead to
disqualification.
● Participants who do not adhere to the rules or fail to provide necessary
documentation upon request may be removed from the challenge at any
time.

5. Awards and Recognition
● Selection of winners will be based on merit, originality, and clarity of the
presented working principle.
● GiA reserves the right to withhold awards if no entry meets the
expected standard.
